StyleMatrix Privacy Policy
Effective: 4 November 2026 · Applies to the StyleMatrix — CSS, Font, Design Token & Tailwind Inspector Chrome extension, version 1.0.0 and later
StyleMatrix is a design inspector for the web page you are viewing. It shows an element's CSS, box model, fonts and color contrast, collects the page's colors, type scale and CSS variables, lists the SVGs and images the page uses, and lets you copy or export the results, for example as CSS, Tailwind CSS or design tokens. All inspection runs inside your browser. StyleMatrix has no account system and no server, and it sends nothing to its developer. It has no analytics, tracking, advertising or remotely loaded code.
In short
- StyleMatrix reads the design of the pages you open (styles, colors, fonts, CSS variables, the text of displayed elements, and the images and SVG graphics they use) and processes it on your own computer. Of the text, it keeps only lengths and short samples.
- Results stay in that tab's memory and are discarded when the tab loads another page, reloads or closes. StyleMatrix saves nothing from the pages you visit except the files you choose to export.
- By default, StyleMatrix counts each page's colors and type styles after the page loads and shows the number on its toolbar icon. You can turn this off.
- It stores only your settings and your license status, in Chrome's extension storage.
- Apart from showing a page's own images and fonts in its previews, StyleMatrix sends requests only when you ask it to:
- License activation: requests to Gumroad to check a purchased license key and count the activation.
- Asset downloads: when you download an image hosted on another server, a request to that server for the file.
- Links: buttons such as Get Lifetime Pro or an asset's Open in a new tab open a website in a new tab when you click them.
- It writes to your clipboard only when you click to copy something, and it never reads your clipboard.
- No data is sold, shared for advertising, or seen by the developer.
1. Information StyleMatrix reads from web pages
StyleMatrix's content script runs on the web pages you open, in the top-level page only. Local files are included only if you turn on Allow access to file URLs for StyleMatrix in Chrome's extension settings. Chrome's own pages and the Chrome Web Store can't be read by any extension.
Until you use StyleMatrix on a page, the script reads nothing from it, except for the toolbar count while that setting is on (section 2).
When StyleMatrix reads a page
- When you use it: opening the toolbar popup (which shows a summary of the page), opening the in-page panel (the drawer that opens beside the page), using Inspect mode, clicking Rescan, or exporting.
- Automatically, for the toolbar count: after each page load, while the Token count on the toolbar icon setting is on. It is on by default. See section 2.
What it reads
- Computed styles of the elements the page displays: colors (of backgrounds, text, borders, gradients and SVG graphics), fonts, sizes, weights, line heights, letter spacing, spacing, borders, shadows and layout. Inspect mode reads the element under your pointer or the one you select. A token scan reads up to 15,000 displayed elements, and an asset scan looks through the displayed elements for images and SVGs.
- CSS variables (custom properties) set on the page's root elements, up to 600, and, for the element you inspect, the page's own style rules that use them. Rules in stylesheets loaded from other websites can't be read and are skipped.
- Fonts: the font families the page uses, which of the page's web fonts have loaded, and which font in each family list actually displays. To find that out, StyleMatrix measures sample text inside your browser, which can show whether a font named by the page is installed on your computer. The result is used only to label the font.
- Text of displayed elements: to measure how much text each type style covers, a token scan reads the text of each displayed element and keeps only its length, plus a sample of up to 64 characters for each type style. Samples are shown in the Typography scale and included in some exports (section 4). Inspect mode also reads up to 80 characters of the element under the pointer, which it neither shows nor keeps. When you copy an element as Tailwind JSX (Pro), up to 120 characters of that element's own text are included in the copy. Samples are whatever the page shows, so they can include personal information displayed on the page, such as a name. Text in editable areas of a page, such as a rich-text editor, is page text too and can appear in a sample.
- Element names and attributes: tag names, IDs and class names, used for labels, the element path and the selector in the Clean CSS copy. When you copy Tailwind JSX (Pro), StyleMatrix also reads a few attributes of that element: link address, image address and alt text, input type, name and placeholder, label target, role and aria-label. To name the page's graphics, it reads an SVG's aria-label or title, the aria-label of its nearest labelled parent element, or its ID or class; an image is named after its file name or alt text.
- Images and graphics: the addresses of the images and CSS background images the page displays (kept exactly as the page uses them, including any query string), their sizes and alt text, and the markup of the page's inline SVG graphics, including any title or text inside them. Scripts, embedded HTML and event-handler attributes are removed from the SVG markup.
- The page's address, host name and title: the host name labels the results and the export file names; the title (or the address, if there is no title) is shown in the popup; the full address, including any query string and #fragment, is written into most exports (section 4).
Where the results go
All of this is processed locally in your browser. The results are kept in the memory of that tab, where a scan is reused for a few seconds and then refreshed when needed. They are discarded when the tab loads another page, reloads or closes. They are never written to storage and never sent to the developer or anyone else.
Scan results leave the tab only in these ways, all within your computer:
- the number for the toolbar icon, sent to StyleMatrix's own background script
- a summary for the popup while it is open: counts, the 8 most-used colors, the 4 main fonts, and the page's host name, address and title
- the text you copy and the files you export, when you ask for them
What StyleMatrix does not read
- the values typed into form fields, including passwords
- cookies or other data that websites store in your browser
- your browsing history or bookmarks
- your clipboard
- the content of frames embedded in the page, such as embedded videos, ads or payment forms
StyleMatrix does not keep a record of the sites you visit.
Pointer and keyboard
- On every page, StyleMatrix listens for Alt+Shift+S, so the shortcut can turn Inspect mode on or off even before you open StyleMatrix there. This in-page listener works alongside Chrome's keyboard shortcut setting: it stays active if you change or remove the shortcut at
chrome://, and outside text fields it keeps Alt+Shift+S from reaching the page. It ignores every other key.extensions/ shortcuts - While Inspect mode is on, StyleMatrix follows the pointer position to highlight the element under it, catches clicks so they select elements instead of following links, responds to Esc and the arrow keys (to unpin, stop inspecting, or move through the page's structure), and follows scrolling to keep its overlay in place. These listeners are removed when Inspect mode ends.
None of this is recorded, stored or sent.
What StyleMatrix adds to a page
StyleMatrix does not change a page's content or styles. Its panel, overlay and highlights are drawn inside one container element that it adds to the page the first time you open its panel or turn on Inspect mode there, or on every page if you turn on Launcher on every page (off by default).
2. The toolbar count (automatic scan)
The setting Token count on the toolbar icon is on by default. While it is on, on every page you open:
- About 0.6 seconds after the page finishes loading, when your browser is next idle (within about 3 seconds), StyleMatrix scans up to 15,000 displayed elements. This is the token scan described in section 1: colors, type styles with their text samples, fonts, CSS variables, and the page's address and title. It runs in short slices so the page stays responsive. The asset scan (image addresses and SVG markup) does not run for the count.
- On sites that switch pages without a full reload, it scans again about 1.5 seconds after each such switch.
- The result stays in that tab's memory like any other scan. Only one number leaves the tab: the count of distinct colors plus type styles, which StyleMatrix's background script shows on the toolbar icon for that tab.
To turn it off: open the toolbar popup → Pro / Settings (or the Pro tab of the in-page panel) and switch off Token count on the toolbar icon. StyleMatrix clears the count and stops scanning pages on its own. It then reads a page only when you use it.
3. Information stored on your device
| Storage key | Where | What it holds | Removed when |
|---|---|---|---|
show | chrome. | Whether the toolbar count is on (on by default) | You change the setting, or uninstall StyleMatrix |
always | chrome. | Whether the floating launcher appears on every page (off by default) | You change the setting, or uninstall StyleMatrix |
drawer | chrome. | Which side of the window the in-page panel docks to | You change it, or uninstall StyleMatrix |
asset | chrome. | Dark or light backdrop behind asset previews | You change it, or uninstall StyleMatrix |
jsx | chrome. | Whether SVG-to-JSX copies use current (on by default) | You change it, or uninstall StyleMatrix |
swatch | chrome. | Whether clicking a color copies HEX, RGB or HSL | You change it, or uninstall StyleMatrix |
pro | chrome., plus a copy in chrome. | License status: whether Pro is active, your license key, when it was activated, and how it was verified (reviewer key or Gumroad) | You click Remove license from this browser (Pro / Settings), or uninstall StyleMatrix (local copy) |
A setting is saved only after you change it; until then StyleMatrix uses the default. Settings stay on this computer and are not synced.
Your license key is stored in capital letters with spaces removed, in Chrome's extension storage, without additional encryption. Your license status does not include your name, email address or any purchase details.
StyleMatrix stores nothing else. In particular, it never stores scan results, page addresses, page text, colors, images or a list of the pages you visit, and it does not use cookies, local or IndexedDB.
About chrome.: StyleMatrix keeps a copy of your license status there so Pro follows your Chrome profile to your other computers. If Chrome Sync is turned on, Google syncs this data across the browsers signed in to your Google Account, under Google's Privacy Policy. The developer has no access to it. If Chrome Sync is off, the copy stays on your device. To clear the synced copy, use Remove license from this browser before uninstalling.
4. Clipboard and exports
Clipboard (write only)
StyleMatrix writes to your clipboard only when you click a copy button, a color swatch or a type-scale row. It never reads your clipboard.
What you can copy:
- Free: a color (HEX, RGB or HSL), a type style's CSS, an element's Clean CSS (with a selector made of its tag name, ID and class names), and an SVG's markup.
- Pro: an element's Tailwind classes, the element as Tailwind JSX (with the attributes and text described in section 1), and an SVG as a React/TSX component.
StyleMatrix uses the browser's clipboard API. Where that isn't available, for example on pages served over plain http://, it uses the browser's copy command on a hidden text field, which the clipboard permission allows. Copied text is on your system clipboard like anything else you copy.
Exports and downloads
Exports are created in your browser from a scan of the page and saved to your downloads folder like any other download. StyleMatrix does not need the downloads permission for this. Export file names contain the site's host name and the date, for example stylematrix-example.. The exceptions are tailwind. and single assets, which are saved under the asset's own name: an image's file name, or an SVG's label as described in section 1.
| Export | Contains |
|---|---|
| CSV (free) | Colors by role, type styles with a text sample of up to 64 characters each, font families, and CSS variable names and values. No page address. |
CSS variables, Tailwind @theme and tailwind. (Pro) | Color, font and type tokens, under a header that names the full page address and the date. |
| Design tokens JSON (Pro) | The same tokens, the full page address and date, and each type style's text sample. |
| Asset manifest JSON (Pro) | The full page address and date, and for each asset its name, address and any alternative image sources, sizes, alt text and, for inline SVGs, the markup. |
| HTML gallery (Pro) | The host name and full page address, each asset's name, address and alt text, and the inline SVGs embedded in the file. When you open the file later, your browser loads the listed images from their original addresses. |
| Single asset (free, Assets tab) | The SVG markup, or the image file. |
The page's title is not included in any export. The full page address includes any query string and #fragment (some web apps keep access tokens in the fragment), so if a page's address contains private information, the files that name it will too. Check an export before you share it.
5. Network requests
StyleMatrix makes no network requests to its developer, and its background script makes none at all. These are the only requests it causes:
License activation (only when you enter a purchased key and click "Activate")
StyleMatrix sends up to two HTTPS POST requests to Gumroad's license API, https://. The body of each contains three form fields:
product_id: the StyleMatrix Pro product IDlicense_key: your license keyincrement_uses_count: whether this request counts as an activation
The requests are:
- A check (
increment_uses_count=false), which doesn't count as an activation. - Only if the key is valid, the purchase hasn't been refunded, charged back or disputed, and the key has been activated fewer than 3 times, a second request (
increment_uses_count=true) that counts this activation. A key that fails the check doesn't use up an activation.
Gumroad's reply includes whether the key is valid, how many times it has been activated, and details of the purchase, such as the email address used at checkout and whether the purchase was refunded, charged back or disputed. StyleMatrix uses only the validity, the activation count and the refund, chargeback and dispute flags, to decide whether to unlock Pro. It does not store, show or forward the reply. If activation succeeds, StyleMatrix stores your license status as described in section 3. If it fails, nothing is stored.
Like any website, Gumroad also receives standard request information, such as your IP address and browser type. If you activate from the toolbar popup, the request comes from StyleMatrix itself. If you activate from the Pro tab of the in-page panel, Chrome treats the request as coming from the website that panel is open on, so Gumroad also receives that website's address: normally just its origin, such as https://, but possibly the full page address, depending on that site's referrer settings. To keep the website out of it, activate from the toolbar popup. Gumroad handles this information under its own privacy policy.
A key is checked only when you click Activate. StyleMatrix does not contact Gumroad again later or in the background.
The Chrome Web Store reviewer key is checked offline: the extension contains only its SHA-256 hash, so checking it sends no network request.
Downloading an asset from the Assets tab (only when you click "Download")
- Inline SVGs are saved from their markup. No request is made.
- Images from the same website are downloaded directly by your browser, like any download link. Images embedded in the page itself (
data:andblob:addresses) are saved without a request. - Images hosted on another server, such as an image CDN: StyleMatrix asks that server for the file, without cookies, and saves it. If the server doesn't allow this or the request fails, StyleMatrix opens the file's address in a new tab instead, so you can save it from there.
These requests go only to the server that hosts the file the page uses.
Opening an asset in a new tab
The Open in a new tab button on image and background cards opens the file's address in a new tab, as if you had clicked a link to it.
Previews of the page's own files
To draw its previews, the in-page panel uses the page's own files. The Assets tab shows each image by loading it from its address, normally from your browser's cache and without sending a referrer. Type previews use the page's own fonts, which your browser may download from the server the page uses for them.
Links you choose to open
These buttons open a website in a new tab only when you click them, without telling it which page you were on:
- Get Lifetime Pro opens the StyleMatrix Pro page on Gumroad.
- Buy Me a Coffee opens the developer's tip page on Buy Me a Coffee.
Those websites have their own privacy policies.
Exported HTML galleries
When you open an exported HTML gallery, your browser loads the images it lists from their original addresses. This happens outside StyleMatrix.
6. Purchases
StyleMatrix Pro is bought on Gumroad's website, not inside the extension. Gumroad processes your payment and delivers your license key. As the seller, the developer receives the order details Gumroad provides to sellers, such as the email address you used at checkout. Those details are used only to deliver your license key, provide support and handle refunds. They are not linked to anything StyleMatrix does in your browser.
Tips through Buy Me a Coffee are handled by Buy Me a Coffee and don't involve a license key. StyleMatrix exchanges no data with Buy Me a Coffee.
7. What StyleMatrix never does
- It does not sell or rent user data.
- It does not use or transfer data for advertising, including personalized, re-targeted or interest-based ads.
- It has no analytics, telemetry or crash reporting, and no tracking code.
- It does not track you across websites, keep a history of the pages you visit, record your mouse movements, clicks or keystrokes, or build profiles.
- It does not use or transfer data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
- It does not load or run code from the internet. All of its code ships inside the extension package.
- It does not allow anyone to read your data. The developer never receives it.
8. Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
StyleMatrix's use of information received from web pages and Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. In particular:
- StyleMatrix collects, uses and transmits user data only as necessary for its single purpose: inspecting the design of the web page you are viewing (its CSS, box model, typography, color contrast, colors, type scale and graphics) and copying or exporting what it finds, such as CSS, Tailwind CSS, design tokens and the page's graphics. Activating a Pro license supports that purpose.
- StyleMatrix transfers user data to only one party: Gumroad, which receives your license key when you activate a purchased key. Requests for a page's own files (section 5) go to the servers that host them, and if you use Chrome Sync, Google keeps the synced copy of your license status.
- It does not use or transfer user data for advertising, to data brokers or other information resellers, or to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
- No person reads user data. The developer never receives it.
9. Security
- License checks with Gumroad use HTTPS, and the key travels in the request body, not in the web address.
- Your settings and license status are kept in Chrome's extension storage, which websites can't access. Scan results exist only in the memory of the tab.
- SVG markup taken from a page is cleaned before StyleMatrix shows, copies or exports it: scripts, embedded HTML and event-handler attributes are removed.
- In CSV exports, cells that begin with
=,+,-or@get a leading apostrophe, so spreadsheet apps don't run page text as formulas. - The in-page panel is part of the page. It is isolated from the page's styles, but the page's own scripts could technically read what the panel shows and what you type into it, including a license key typed into its Pro tab. The toolbar popup is separate from web pages, so activate your license there.
- As part of the framework StyleMatrix is built with, its content script posts a short start-up message to each page it runs on. The message contains StyleMatrix's extension ID and internal identifiers but no information about you or the page. It does mean a website's scripts could tell that StyleMatrix is installed.
10. Children
StyleMatrix is a design and development tool. It is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
11. Your choices
- Turn off the toolbar count and its automatic scan: toolbar popup → Pro / Settings → Token count on the toolbar icon.
- Show the launcher on every page, or not: Pro / Settings → Launcher on every page (off by default). The launcher's × button hides it on the current page until you reload the page.
- Limit the sites StyleMatrix can run on:
chrome://→ StyleMatrix → Details → Site access. StyleMatrix can read only the pages Chrome lets it run on.extensions - Remove your license: Pro / Settings → Remove license from this browser. This erases the key from this browser and from the synced copy, so other computers signed in to the same Chrome profile may lose Pro too.
- Remove everything: uninstall StyleMatrix from
chrome://. This deletes its local storage. To clear the synced copy as well, remove your license first.extensions - Exported files stay where you saved them until you delete them.
- Purchase data held by Gumroad: contact Gumroad, or the developer at nijkanani.dev@gmail.com.
12. Changes to this policy
If StyleMatrix's data practices change, this policy will be updated before the new version is released and the effective date above will change. Any new kind of data handling will also be described in the release notes and, where required, StyleMatrix will ask for your consent before it starts.
13. Contact
For questions about this policy or your data, email nijkanani.dev@gmail.com.
